Meta Platforms has taken significant action against sextortion scams by removing 63,000 accounts across its services, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. These accounts were primarily based in Nigeria and were involved in financial sexual extortion schemes targeting adult men in the United States. The scammers, often referred to as 'Yahoo Boys,' solicited intimate photos from their victims and then used these images to blackmail them. Meta's crackdown also included the removal of pages and groups that were organizing, recruiting, and training new scammers. This move follows increased scrutiny and reporting on the issue, highlighting the growing problem of sextortion scams.
