
The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) has experienced significant growth in its major share indices this year, with the NSE All-Share Index (NASI) achieving a 31.73% increase, marking its best annual return since 2013. The NSE 20 Share Index saw a 27.16% rise, the highest since 2012, while the NSE 25 Share Index recorded a 37.89% gain, the best since its introduction in 2015. Weekly performance showed the NSE 20 and NSE All-Share indices increasing by 1.15% and 2.23% respectively. On a daily basis, the NSE witnessed 29 equities and all four indices gaining on Thursday, December 19, 2024, and 27 equities with three indices gaining on Friday, December 20, 2024. Notable performers included Trans Century, which was the top gainer on Thursday with an 8.11% increase, and Eaagads Limited, leading gains on Friday with a 9.09% rise. Conversely, Longhorn Publishers and Uchumi Supermarket were the top losers on those days, declining by 8.7% and 10% respectively. Over the year, East African Portland Cement topped the gains with a 306.88% increase, while Nation Media Group led the losses with a 37.41% decrease. In the broader African market context, the NSE-ASI in Kenya rose by 2.22% to 121.72 points, while the NSX-OI in Namibia fell by 4.31% to 1,787.64 points. Weekly highlights in Kenya included Carbacid leading gains with a 17.11% increase and Uchumi topping losses with an 18.2% decrease. The market also saw KES 307 million in net foreign outflows, with equity turnover surging by 1156.6% to KES 24.9 billion and bond turnover increasing by 58.8% to KES 39.7 billion.
