In a significant development in Kenya, three senior officials from the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), including Managing Director Joseph Muna Kimote, have been arrested and charged over their involvement in a fake fertilizer scandal. The officials are accused of conspiracy to defraud farmers by distributing counterfeit fertilizer valued at approximately Sh209 million. The arrests followed a board meeting and the officials were taken into custody later that day. They have been charged alongside two other individuals, John Ngetich and John Matiri. The scandal has also led to calls from Kenyan politicians for the dismissal of the nation's agriculture secretary, citing the distribution of fake fertilizer through a government subsidy program. The accused have pleaded not guilty and were released on a cash bail of Sh1 million each.
