Elon Musk’s artificial-intelligence start-up xAI has recruited at least 40 former Google employees since 2023, underscoring the fledgling firm’s reliance on talent from the search giant as it scales its operations. Nineteen of those hires were made in 2025, including engineers who previously worked on Google Ads, according to internal staffing data reviewed by The Information. The aggressive recruitment drive has continued despite several recent high-profile departures from xAI. The new employees bolster xAI’s technical capabilities as the company works to develop large-language-model technologies and deepen ties with Musk’s social-media platform X. X and xAI, however, remain separate entities for now.
