OpenAI has announced a significant expansion of its AI infrastructure with the launch of Stargate UAE, a 1-gigawatt AI data center cluster in Abu Dhabi, marking its first large-scale project outside the United States. The project, developed in partnership with G42, Oracle, NVIDIA, Cisco, and SoftBank, is set to be part of a larger 5-gigawatt UAE-US AI Campus. The initial phase of Stargate UAE, expected to deliver 200 megawatts of capacity and powered by 100,000 Nvidia chips, is slated to go live in 2026. In addition to the UAE project, OpenAI is also advancing its AI infrastructure within the U.S. Oracle has committed to purchasing approximately $40 billion worth of NVIDIA's GB200 chips to power a new data center in Abilene, Texas. This facility, part of the U.S. Stargate Project, will provide 1.2 gigawatts of power and is expected to be fully operational by mid-2026. Oracle will lease the computing power to OpenAI for 15 years, reducing its reliance on Microsoft, whose exclusivity agreement with OpenAI ended earlier this year. The Texas data center project has been financed by JPMorgan, with additional investments from Crusoe and Blue Owl Capital. The Stargate initiative, backed by significant investments from OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and Abu Dhabi's MGX, aims to bolster the U.S. and its allies' positions in the global AI race. The UAE's involvement includes investments in U.S. Stargate infrastructure, aligning with broader efforts to enhance AI capabilities responsibly and securely. President Trump has supported this partnership, which also follows the UAE's commitment to invest $1.4 trillion in the U.S. The UAE will become the first country to enable ChatGPT nationwide, providing AI infrastructure and compute capacity within a 2,000-mile radius. OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon will soon launch an Asia Pacific roadshow to explore further collaborations.
