OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Images on March 25, Gains 100 Million Users and 700 Million Images in First Week

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Images on March 25, marking its largest product launch to date. The rollout attracted 100 million new users within the first week, with peak sign-ups reaching one million users per hour. During this period, users generated 700 million images in seven days. The scale of adoption exceeded internal expectations to such an extent that some teams initially suspected a monitoring system error. The engineering team faced considerable challenges managing this unprecedented demand, which has been discussed in detail by OpenAI engineers and external commentators.

🖼️ When we launched ChatGPT imagegen a month ago, it went viral. We were signing up a million users an HOUR, and we saw 700M images created in the first 7 days. It was a wild time internally with a lot of engineering heroics. @snsf and @sulmanrc shared the story here—check it

The ChatGPT ImageGen launch at the end of March was quite crazy. Here is a "behind the scenes" discussion that @sulmanrc and I had with @GergelyOrosz of @Pragmatic_Eng talking about the incredible work that our engineering team did for it. https://t.co/ZJIU3p78Bd
