Argentine authorities have arrested the owner and officials of two pharmaceutical laboratories, including Ariel García Furfaro, in connection with contaminated fentanyl linked to over 80 deaths. The suspects face charges carrying penalties of up to 25 years in prison. Investigations revealed possible quality deviations in the medicinal fentanyl produced. Indictments and interrogations of the accused have begun, although García Furfaro's hearing was postponed. A former official from Argentina's National Administration of Drugs, Food and Medical Technology (ANMAT), responsible for overseeing the laboratory, has been removed from her position amid scrutiny of regulatory oversight. Families of the victims have called for a thorough investigation into a chain of negligence. Additionally, the scandal has sparked political controversy, with former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner criticizing President Javier Milei and the judiciary following the leak of audio recordings involving alleged corruption related to medications. The police conducted 14 raids linked to the corruption case involving Diego Spagnuolo, the dismissed former head of the National Disability Agency (ANDIS). Further searches targeted ANDIS and the Suizo Argentina drugstore, where envelopes containing U.S. dollars were found, intensifying the probe into alleged bribery.
