The Government of the City of Buenos Aires launched “BA Cripto,” a new payment platform that allows residents and businesses to settle municipal taxes and administrative fees using Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The option covers property tax (ABL), vehicle registration and patent fees, traffic fines, and the cost of obtaining or renewing a driver’s license. City officials said the initiative is part of a broader push to modernize public services and streamline payments by integrating digital assets into existing systems. Transactions will be processed through a government-provided integrator designed to accept payments from any cryptocurrency wallet via QR code. Mayor Jorge Macri said the program aims to make the capital “increasingly crypto-friendly,” noting that Argentina hosts more than 10 million crypto accounts, or roughly 22% of the region’s total. The city is also updating its tax code to create specific categories for virtual-asset service providers and to adjust the tax base so businesses pay levies only on the margin between crypto purchase and sale prices.
