A two-year-old boy is in critical condition at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital after being hit by a white van while riding a balance bike across a pedestrian crossing in Chelsea Heights on Monday night. Victoria Police said the child and his father had a green pedestrian signal when the van struck the boy at about 9:10 p.m. on Thames Promenade near the intersection with Mulkarra Drive. An off-duty police officer rendered first aid before emergency crews arrived and placed the child on life support. Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit have interviewed the 29-year-old driver, a man from Clyde, and released him pending further inquiries. Police are appealing for witnesses and dash-camera footage as they continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision.
