A recent study from the University of Toronto has found that cryptocurrency owners are more likely to exhibit psychopathic traits compared to the general population. The research, highlighted by economist Steve Hanke, indicates that about 30% of those surveyed in 2022 owned cryptocurrency. The study suggests that crypto holders often display characteristics associated with the 'Dark Tetrad' of personality traits, which includes narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism. Furthermore, the findings suggest that these individuals tend to have a contrarian mindset, a need for chaos, and a higher propensity to believe in conspiracy theories. The strongest predictors of crypto ownership identified in the study include being male, having a victimhood mindset, and relying on fringe social media for news. These insights contribute to a growing discourse on the psychological profiles associated with cryptocurrency investors.
