Base, a blockchain platform, has announced significant upgrades aimed at enhancing its speed, simplicity, and power. The introduction of Flashblocks is set to reduce block times from 2 seconds to 200 milliseconds, making Base the fastest Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) chain to date. This technology, which is currently live on the Base Sepolia testnet, is expected to roll out to the mainnet in Q2 2025. The announcement was made at the ETHDenver stage. Additionally, Base is introducing Appchains, which are Layer-3 chains designed to help applications scale by providing dedicated blockspace. This feature is powered by the op-enclave framework and is targeted at high-traffic, mature applications that require customized infrastructure. To simplify user experience, Base has launched Smart Wallet Sub Accounts on its testnet. This feature aims to reduce wallet pop-ups, enhance security, and eliminate the need for users to manually manage different onchain accounts. Smart Wallet Sub Accounts are set to go live on the mainnet in Q2 2025. The upgrades are expected to 10x the user experience and make Base 2x faster than Solana.
