A tenth resident, 66-year-old Brenda Cropper, died late Wednesday from injuries sustained in the blaze that swept through the Gabriel House Assisted Living Facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, bringing the death toll to 10. All of the victims were over 60; more than 30 other people, including five firefighters, were injured. The five-alarm fire erupted around 9:50 p.m. on Sunday in a second-floor room of the 100-unit building, which housed about 70 residents. Heavy smoke and flames trapped occupants, some of whom hung from windows screaming for help before police, neighbours and roughly 50 firefighters—30 of them off-duty—pulled them to safety. Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office, local police and the Bristol County district attorney say the blaze appears accidental, though the precise cause has not been determined. It is the deadliest fire in Massachusetts since a 1984 rooming-house tragedy that killed 15. Attention has turned to preparedness. Union officials said understaffing slowed the rescue effort, prompting Mayor Paul Coogan to authorise immediate overtime shifts and outline a plan to hire 15–20 additional firefighters over the next two years. Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon said the swift initial knock-down prevented what he believes could have been "50-plus" fatalities. Regulatory questions are also mounting after records showed Gabriel House was cited in past inspections for failing to promptly report health and safety incidents and was due for a recertification review later this year. Owner Dennis Etzkorn has not commented publicly as the inquiry continues.
