Today marks the 20th anniversary of Massachusetts becoming the first state to legalize same-sex marriage. On May 17, 2004, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court issued a landmark ruling that allowed same-sex couples to apply for marriage licenses. The decision, led by attorney Mary Bonauto, paved the way for marriage equality across the United States. By 2015, same-sex marriage was legalized in all 50 states. Same-sex couples in Massachusetts reflect on the past 20 years, celebrating the rights and recognition they have gained.
