Former super-featherweight world champion Joe Cordina made a successful return to the ring on Saturday, outpointing Mexico’s Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz over 10 rounds to capture the vacant WBO Global lightweight belt. Judges scored the bout 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92 in favour of the Welsh fighter, who controlled much of the contest behind a sharp jab and timely counters on the DAZN-televised card tagged #CatterallEubank. The victory marked Cordina’s first bout since May 2024 and his debut at lightweight, improving his record to 18-1 with nine knockouts while Gonzalez fell to 17-2. Cordina, briefly wobbled by a left hook in the middle rounds, said he "needed something like that—10 rounds," to shake off ring rust after his extended layoff. Trainer Gary Lockett praised the 33-year-old’s composure, calling him "one of the most talented fighters in Britain," and promoter Eddie Hearn indicated plans to position Cordina for a world-title shot later this year, potentially against the winner of the upcoming Abdullah Mason-Sam Noakes clash.
