Brazilian cartoonist Sérgio de Magalhães Gomes Jaguaribe, better known as Jaguar, died on Sunday, 24 August, in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 93. His death, caused by complications from pneumonia after three weeks of treatment at the Copa D’Or hospital, was confirmed by his widow, Celia Regina Pierantoni. Jaguar was a co-founder of the satirical weekly O Pasquim, launched in 1969 and celebrated for its irreverent criticism of Brazil’s military regime. He also wrote the graphic poetry collection “Átila, você é bárbaro” (1968), which became an instant succès d’estime for its ironic take on prejudice and violence. Born in Rio on 29 February 1932, Jaguar began drawing for the magazine Manchete in 1952 and went on to contribute to Senhor, Última Hora and other influential outlets. He remained with O Pasquim until its final edition in 1991, cementing his reputation as one of Brazil’s most prominent political satirists.
