The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported a significant increase in consumer fraud losses in 2024, reaching $12.5 billion, up 25% from the previous year. Investment scams were the most costly, accounting for $5.7 billion of the total losses, with 79% of victims losing money and a median loss of over $9,000 per victim. In Brazil, a coordinated operation by the Civil and Military Police targeted the luxury 'resort' of notorious drug trafficker Álvaro Malaquias Santa Rosa, known as 'Peixão', in the Complexo de Israel, a region in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro. The operation resulted in the demolition of the resort, which featured an artificial lake and a symbol of the Star of David, and the arrest of four individuals. Simultaneously, the Federal Police launched 'Operation Red Dots' across Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, and Rio de Janeiro to dismantle a criminal organization linked to the Comando Vermelho, which allegedly assisted in the escape of two inmates from the Mossoró federal prison. The operation led to the execution of 14 prison orders, 13 temporary orders, and 31 search warrants, resulting in the seizure of R$ 22.5 million in assets and the blocking of 32 bank accounts. Additionally, the Federal Police, in collaboration with SENAD from Paraguay, eradicated 4,500 tons of marijuana as part of the 48th phase of Operation Nova Aliança.
