Ricardo Rodrigues Gomes, known as 'Piloto' and accused of being the principal operator for Glaidson Acácio dos Santos, the 'Faraó dos Bitcoins,' was arrested on March 4 in Miami, Florida. He had been a fugitive for four years and was captured in a joint operation by the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Brazil's Federal Police. Piloto is accused of participating in a criminal scheme led by Glaidson, which operated as a financial pyramid involving false cryptocurrency investment promises and allegedly moved over R$ 38 billion illegally between 2015 and 2021. Investigations revealed that Piloto used a fake passport to leave Brazil and continued his activities in the U.S., including creating companies, managing bank accounts, acquiring crypto assets, and facilitating migration documents. He also reportedly used stablecoins to transfer funds and issued falsified invoices to justify deposits. Piloto, who had ties to the late Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, had been listed on Interpol's Red Notice since August 2022. He is currently in U.S. custody, awaiting deportation or extradition to Brazil, where he faces charges that could lead to a sentence of up to 26 years in prison.
