The Brazilian Federal Police (PF) has launched an operation, named 'Cashback,' targeting a scheme involving the misappropriation of over R$ 40 million in public health funds in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. The alleged irregularities date back to the Covid-19 pandemic and include fraudulent contracts, embezzlement, and improper payments to public officials. Six search and seizure warrants were executed, and measures such as the suspension of public officials, prohibition of public contracts, and freezing of assets were imposed by the judiciary. Among those implicated are the mayor of Paraty, Luciano de Oliveira Vidal, his wife, and an unnamed businessman. The suspects may face charges of electoral crimes, active and passive corruption, and procurement fraud. The operation highlights ongoing efforts to combat corruption and safeguard public resources in Brazil.
