Vasco da Gama humiliated Santos 6–0 on Sunday in São Paulo’s Morumbis stadium, with midfielder Philippe Coutinho scoring twice and teammates Lucas Piton, Rayan, David and Tché Tché adding a goal each. Neymar, who has started the last six league matches since returning from injury, was largely contained throughout the contest. The margin was Vasco’s biggest triumph over Santos in 98 years and the heaviest home league defeat in Santos’s history. The result lifted the Rio de Janeiro club to 16th place on 19 points, moving it out of the relegation zone, while Santos slipped to 15th on 21 points after 20 rounds of the Brasileirão. Hours after the final whistle, Santos dismissed head coach Cleber Xavier, who had collected only five wins in 15 matches and a 42.2% points return since taking charge in April. The club said it is evaluating candidates, with former Argentina and Santos manager Jorge Sampaoli among the leading options.
