Albertsons Companies reported fourth quarter revenue of $18.8 billion, up 2.51% year-on-year, and adjusted earnings per share of $0.46, beating analyst estimates. Net income for the quarter was $171.8 million. The company operates 2,270 retail stores and saw pharmacy revenue rise 18% and digital sales increase 24%, now accounting for more than 8% of grocery revenue. Despite the positive results, Albertsons forecast annual profit below market expectations, projecting fiscal 2025 adjusted earnings of $2.03 to $2.16 per share and same-store sales growth of 1.5% to 2.5%. The company cited rising costs, selective discounts, and investments in its loyalty program as factors affecting future profitability. Shares fell 3% following the outlook announcement. Albertsons is undergoing a leadership transition, with Susan Morris, the current COO, set to become CEO on May 1, succeeding Vivek Sankaran. Sainsbury's, the UK's second-largest supermarket with a 15% market share, reported annual profits above £1 billion, including £1.036 billion in retail underlying operating profit and £761 million in underlying pre-tax profits, up 9%. Group sales reached £31.56 billion, with 4.2% growth in grocery sales and 3.2% growth in retail sales. Argos sales were £4.9 billion. Sainsbury's expects flat profits in the coming year amid rising costs and intensifying competition, particularly with Asda and Tesco, as a supermarket price war escalates. The company announced a £200 million share buyback, a £250 million special dividend, plans to open 15 supermarkets and 50 new convenience stores in the next two years, and 400,000 square feet of new space. Sainsbury's also cut more than 3,000 jobs and closed 61 in-store cafes.
