Three people were killed and a fourth was left in a serious condition after a light helicopter crashed into a field near Ventnor on Britain’s Isle of Wight on Monday morning, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said. The sole survivor was air-lifted to University Hospital Southampton. Operator Northumbria Helicopters confirmed the aircraft—Robinson R44 II, tail number G-OCLV—had departed Sandown Airport shortly after 09:00 BST for a flying lesson carrying four people, including the pilot, when it came down at about 09:24. Local media cited an eyewitness who saw the helicopter spiralling before impact. Police, fire crews and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance responded, and a major incident was initially declared before being stood down later in the day. The A3020 Shanklin Road remained closed for several hours to allow emergency services to secure the rural crash site. The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch has deployed a team to determine the cause of the accident. Authorities have not released the identities of those on board, and the operator said it is cooperating fully with the investigation.
