Lucasfilm has begun principal photography in the United Kingdom on “Star Wars: Starfighter,” a standalone feature directed by Shawn Levy and slated for global theatrical release on 28 May 2027, the studio said on Thursday. Ryan Gosling, whose involvement was announced earlier this year, headlines the cast. Newly confirmed performers include six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams and “Doctor Who” alumnus Matt Smith, alongside Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings and child actor Flynn Gray, who appears in a first-look set image released with the announcement. The film is billed as an entirely original adventure set five years after 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” marking the franchise’s first move beyond the Skywalker saga on the big screen. Jonathan Tropper wrote the script, and Oscar-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda (“Life of Pi,” “Top Gun: Maverick”) is handling the visuals. “I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on ‘Starfighter,’” Levy said in a statement, adding that joining the storied franchise is “the thrill of a lifetime.” The project is produced by Levy and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, with Gosling among the executive producers.
