Britain’s Polari Prize for LGBTQ literature has been called off for 2025 after a boycott by authors and a judge over the inclusion of Irish novelist John Boyne on the long-list. Boyne, best known for “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas,” had publicly defended J.K. Rowling’s views on sex and gender, prompting criticism from trans-rights activists. Following the long-list announcement on 1 August, several shortlisted writers withdrew and judge Nicola Dinan resigned, arguing Boyne’s comments were incompatible with the prize’s ethos. Organisers initially stood by the list but on 18 August said this year’s award would be “paused” and pledged to expand future judging panels to include more trans and gender-non-conforming representation. The cancellation means no prize money or accolades will be issued this cycle and marks the first time the Polari Prize, founded in 2011 to celebrate LGBTQ writing, has been suspended. Organisers said they would review procedures before the 2026 competition.
