The UK government has launched a new artificial-intelligence system designed to automate the drafting of hospital discharge summaries, aiming to reduce delays and free bed space across the National Health Service. The technology is being piloted at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust and will be deployed through the NHS Federated Data Platform if the trial proves successful. Health Secretary Wes Streeting described the tool as “potentially transformational,” saying it will shift doctors’ time from paperwork to patient care and help cut waiting times as part of the government’s 10-year health plan. Current manual processes can leave patients waiting for hours before discharge because clinicians must complete forms during already busy shifts. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said wider adoption of similar AI applications across public services could unlock about £45 billion in productivity gains. Officials added that the discharge platform is one of several government-backed AI projects intended to modernise the public sector and ease persistent NHS backlogs.
