'If a community hosts a pylon they will get a bill discount' Energy Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh was asked on #BBCBreakfast about plans to give give homeowners up to £250 off their annual energy bills to compensate them for living near to new electricity pylons https://t.co/ZBLbq36epc
The UK government has confirmed a scheme that will give households living close to newly built electricity pylons a discount on their energy bills as part of efforts to accelerate grid expansion. Eligible homes will receive up to £250 a year for ten years—paid as £125 every six months—amounting to a potential £2,500 saving per household. The Department for Energy estimates about 400,000 households could qualify. Energy Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh said the incentive is designed to give communities a direct stake in essential grid upgrades and help overcome local resistance to pylons needed for the country’s push toward fully decarbonised power by 2030.
