Alaska Airlines has signed an agreement with SpaceX to equip its entire fleet with Starlink satellite-based Wi-Fi, expanding the technology beyond subsidiary Hawaiian Airlines. Installations are scheduled to begin in December and are expected to cover more than 230 mainline jets and regional aircraft by early 2027. Alaska said the high-bandwidth connection will be offered at no charge to members of its newly launched Atmos Rewards loyalty programme. The deal strengthens Starlink’s foothold in commercial aviation as carriers race to upgrade slow, geostationary satellite links. Bloomberg estimates put installation costs at roughly $300,000 for a Boeing 737 and about $500,000 for a 787, with ongoing connectivity fees of around $120 per seat per month. SpaceX says Starlink has already supported more than 200,000 passenger flights. British Airways is in discussions to retrofit its roughly 300 aircraft with the same system, according to people familiar with the matter, and SpaceX is also courting Middle Eastern flag-carriers. United Airlines, Qatar Airways, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Hawaiian Airlines and U.S. charter operator JSX have already signed on or begun installations, underscoring Starlink’s growing challenge to legacy in-flight connectivity suppliers such as Viasat and Echostar.
