Apple on 19 August expanded its Self Service Repair and Genuine Parts Distributor programs to Canada, giving consumers and independent technicians nationwide access to the same parts, tools, manuals and diagnostic software used in Apple Stores. Customers can buy or rent toolkits, and receive credits when they return used components for refurbishment or recycling. The addition of Canada brings the initiative to 35 countries, according to the company. Apple said the move means about 80 % of Canadians now live within a 30-minute drive of an Apple Store, authorised service provider or do-it-yourself option. Parts for iPhone, iPad and Mac will be supplied through MobileSentrix, Apple’s authorised Canadian distributor. Launched in the United States in 2021 after years of resistance to right-to-repair efforts, Self Service Repair now supports around 65 devices, including iPhone 12 and later models as well as recent iPads and Macs. Apple Watch and AirPods are not yet covered. AppleCare Service and Repair vice-president Brian Naumann said the Canadian rollout is “another milestone” in the firm’s aim to extend product longevity and reduce waste.
