The Toronto Blue Jays became the first American League team to reach 70 victories this season, defeating the Chicago Cubs 5–1 at Rogers Centre on Tuesday night. Utility infielder Ernie Clement opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the fourth inning—his third straight game going deep and ninth blast of the year—while Daulton Varsho added insurance with a solo shot in the eighth. Right-hander Jose Berrios (9-4) held Chicago scoreless over 5⅓ innings, limiting the Cubs to two hits despite four walks and logging three strikeouts. Toronto’s bullpen of Mason Fluharty, Tommy Nance, Louis Varland and Jeff Hoffman preserved the lead, surrendering just one run on two hits the rest of the way. Cubs starter Javier Assad (0-1) yielded four earned runs in his first appearance since returning from the 60-day injured list. At 70-50, the Blue Jays own the AL’s best record and the league’s top home mark at 39-19. They also improved to 23-11 in interleague play, the highest winning percentage in Major League Baseball. Chicago slipped to 67-51 but remains second in the National League Central. The three-game set continues Wednesday, with Toronto’s Kevin Gausman scheduled to face Cubs rookie Cade Horton.
