A Canadian court has approved a $23 billion settlement to resolve longstanding litigation involving major tobacco companies, including British American Tobacco (BAT). The settlement allows BAT, which owns brands such as Peter Stuyvesant and Paul Mall, to transfer $525 million to its deconsolidated Canadian affiliate. Additionally, BAT will retain over 15% of net income from cigarette sales until the total fine is paid, while profits from smoke-free products will remain separate and protected from claims.
