Canadian travel to the United States has fallen sharply amid escalating trade and political frictions. Statistics Canada reported that in July cross-border car trips dropped 37% from a year earlier and airline returns declined 26%, extending a seven-month slide. Industry data show overall Canadian travel to the United States is down roughly one-third so far this year. The pullback is being felt acutely in Las Vegas, traditionally a popular destination for Canadian visitors. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said summer visitor volume is 11% lower than last year, and first-half arrivals dropped to 19.5 million, a 7.3% year-over-year decline. Local businesses interviewed by the Las Vegas Review-Journal report softer consumer spending and note the area’s 5.8% unemployment rate is now among the highest for large U.S. metro areas. The downturn comes even as national spending figures paint a more mixed picture. The International Trade Administration estimates international visitors spent a record US$127 billion in the United States during the first six months of 2025. Yet The Economist’s analysis of airport data shows foreign arrivals overall are down 3.8%, or about 1.3 million travellers, compared with 2024, suggesting higher-spending tourists are offsetting lower volumes. Economists and local officials attribute the weakness in Canadian demand—and broader softness in some markets—to the Trump administration’s summer tariff increases and stricter border policies, which they say have damped consumer confidence and prompted informal boycotts. Hoteliers and casinos in Las Vegas have begun offering discounts to stem the slide, but analysts warn that further declines in cross-border travel could deepen revenue and employment pressures in tourism-reliant regions.
