Canada is experiencing its second-worst wildfire season on record in 2025, with fires having burned approximately 7.4 million hectares as of August 11. The extensive smoke from these wildfires has drifted southward, severely impacting air quality across parts of Canada and the United States, including major cities from Chicago to New York and states such as Minnesota. The smoke has caused poor and unhealthy air quality alerts in multiple regions. In Colorado, the Lee Fire, burning in Rio Blanco County near Meeker and heading toward Rifle, has grown to over 120,000 acres, making it the fifth-largest wildfire in the state's history. As of August 11, the fire had burned 113,378 acres with only 7% containment, but by August 13, it had expanded to more than 120,000 acres with containment dropping. The fire has prompted mandatory evacuation orders for residents in Garfield County and led to the evacuation of a Colorado prison. Firefighting efforts involve over 1,200 firefighters, 13 aircraft, 62 fire trucks, and 21 hand crews. Additionally, the Dragon Bravo Fire at the Grand Canyon's North Rim has burned over 144,000 acres, with crews actively working to control the blaze amid changing weather conditions. The ongoing wildfires and associated smoke continue to pose health risks and disrupt communities across North America.
