"These [jobs] don't come around often, but with this city, this fanbase, these owners ... there are only 30 of them in the NBA, but to me this is 1-of-1. I grew up playing basketball as a small kid, but for it to lead to this is unbelievable" -- Bobby Webster on Raptors top job.
Can confirm for @Sportsnet that Bobby Webster will be the Raptors new president, promoting him from his role as general manager, replacing his former boss, Masai Ujiri.
The Toronto Raptors have elevated general manager Bobby Webster to head of basketball operations and agreed to a new contract with the 40-year-old executive, the team said Monday. Webster, who joined the Raptors in 2013 as Masai Ujiri’s first hire, has served as general manager since 2017 and helped construct the roster that won the franchise’s first NBA championship in 2019. He will continue to hold the GM title while overseeing all basketball decisions, according to parent company Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. MLSE chief executive Keith Pelley said Webster will receive “full support” from the ownership group. The promotion follows the offseason dismissal of Ujiri, the club’s former president. Webster, a Hawaii native who previously spent seven years in the NBA league office working on collective-bargaining matters, called the Toronto role “1-of-1,” adding that jobs of this magnitude “don’t come around often.”
