Two American passengers on separate Carnival cruise ships died in unrelated drowning incidents on Friday at Celebration Key, the cruise line’s new private resort on Grand Bahama, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force and Carnival Cruise Line. A 79-year-old man lost consciousness while snorkeling just before noon, and a 74-year-old woman became unresponsive while swimming in a pool slightly after 2:30 p.m. Lifeguards administered CPR in both cases, but each victim was pronounced dead by a doctor at the scene. The man had been sailing on the Carnival Mardi Gras out of Port Canaveral, while the woman was a passenger on the Carnival Elation from Jacksonville. Both were visiting the resort with family members. Carnival said its care team is assisting the families and that it is cooperating with Bahamian authorities. Celebration Key opened in July following a roughly $600 million investment and can accommodate two of the company’s largest ships simultaneously. The resort features beaches, lagoons, pools and other attractions intended exclusively for Carnival guests. Police said autopsies will determine the exact causes of death. Investigations by the Royal Bahamas Police Force remain ongoing.
