Actor Aubrey Plaza has spoken publicly for the first time about the death of her husband, writer-director Jeff Baena, who died by suicide in January. Appearing on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast released Tuesday, the 41-year-old described her grief as a “daily struggle” and likened it to “a giant ocean of awfulness.” Plaza said she is “here and functioning” but compared her emotional state to the 2025 sci-fi film “The Gorge,” explaining that grief feels like standing between two cliffs while “monster people” try to pull her into an abyss. The interview marked her most detailed comments since she and Baena’s family issued a brief statement in early January calling his death “an unimaginable tragedy.” Baena, 47, was found dead at his Los Angeles home on Jan. 3. He and Plaza began dating in 2011, married in 2021 and collaborated on several projects, including “Life After Beth” and “Spin Me Round.” Plaza recorded the podcast while promoting her new film “Honey Don’t!,” which opens in theaters on Aug. 22. Poehler addressed Baena’s death at the start of the episode, telling listeners that fans had been concerned about Plaza’s well-being. The discussion comes amid renewed calls from mental-health advocates to publicize resources such as the U.S. Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, reachable by dialing 988.
