A Chicago police officer fired at an armed suspect Friday afternoon after witnessing the individual shoot toward a victim in the 2000 block of East 71st Street in the South Shore neighborhood, according to a Chicago Police Department statement. The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. while officers were on patrol; they pursued the suspect on foot and one officer discharged a weapon. No one was struck by gunfire, and the suspect fled. As of Friday evening no arrests had been made. The department’s Investigative Response Team and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability have opened separate inquiries, and the officers involved have been placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days, in line with CPD policy.
