A 17-year-old boy, identified by the Cook County medical examiner as Sameer Quadri of Evanston, was pronounced dead Wednesday night after being pulled from Lake Michigan near Lighthouse Beach, according to Evanston fire officials. Rescuers were dispatched shortly before 9 p.m. when witnesses reported the teenager had gone under while swimming with friends along a break wall. The Evanston Fire Department deployed marine units, a drone equipped with infrared sensors and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter. Quadri was located about 30 yards south of the break wall and brought ashore before 9:30 p.m.; advanced life-support measures continued en route to Evanston Hospital, where he was declared dead at 9:55 p.m. The incident came amid National Weather Service advisories warning of life-threatening surf and currents along northern and central Cook County beaches. Evanston officials closed all city beaches until 10 a.m. Thursday and urged swimmers to obey posted warnings.
