USTR Greer didn’t hide his annoyance with China’s chokehold on rare earths and made it clear to his counterpart today. “We don't ever want to talk about magnets again,” he said. “We just want to have the magnets flowing as they're supposed to be flowing.” https://t.co/XadNJGmbP7 https://t.co/ues7D0MckO
After two days of talks in Stockholm that ended without the announcement of a new truce, I asked @USTradeRep what the biggest concession is China’s made in trade talks so far. “Well, I would say they blocked all of their rare earth magnets, and now we're getting them,” he said.
U.S. TRADE REPRESENTATIVE GREER: HELD DISCUSSIONS WITH SWEDEN ON AUTOS AND STAINLESS STEEL.
U.S. Trade Representative Greer said China has agreed to resume shipments of rare earth magnets, calling the move the most significant concession secured during two days of trade talks that ended in Stockholm on Tuesday. Greer, who has repeatedly criticized Beijing’s previous restrictions, told reporters the United States "doesn’t ever want to talk about magnets again" and will "make sure magnets are flowing." He added that negotiators also examined ways to prevent China from diverting the components through third countries. Separate discussions with Swedish officials covered market access for autos and stainless-steel products, Greer said, adding that further talks can proceed once magnet supplies stabilize.
