China's automobile industry showed robust growth in July 2025, with total auto output reaching 2.591 million units, a 13.3% year-on-year increase, and sales rising 14.7% to 2.593 million units, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). Exports of vehicles from China also expanded, totaling 575,000 units in July, driven primarily by new-energy vehicles (NEVs). NEV shipments abroad surged 84.6% year-on-year to 1.31 million vehicles in the first seven months of 2025, accounting for more than a third of total exports, while exports of conventional cars declined by 7%. Dongfeng Motor reported a 35.5% increase in NEV sales to 249,571 units in the first seven months, despite an 8.9% drop in overall car sales to 978,462 units. Globally, electric vehicle (EV) sales grew 21% in July, reaching 1.6 million units, although the growth pace slowed compared to earlier months. For the first seven months of 2025, global EV sales rose 27% year-on-year to approximately 10.7 million units, with China leading at 6.5 million units (+29%), followed by Europe with 2.3 million units (+30%), North America with 1 million units (+2%), and the rest of the world with 0.9 million units (+42%). In the U.S., EV market share slightly declined to 8.6% in June from 8.8% a year earlier, despite a 4.6% increase in new EV registrations. In Southeast Asia, BYD dominated Indonesia's EV market in the first seven months with 16,427 units sold, while its premium sub-brand Denza sold 6,256 units. Chinese automaker Geely is also accelerating its EV rollout to compete with market leader BYD. Incentives for EV purchases in China hit a record high in July, with average packages reaching 17.5% of the average transaction price, a 40% increase year-on-year, contributing to the second-best EV sales month on record. Overall, the global EV market continues to expand, supported by strong demand in China and Europe, despite some regional slowdowns.
