China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology summoned executives from 14 domestic photovoltaic manufacturers and industry associations to Beijing on 3 July to address mounting losses triggered by a prolonged price war and excess production capacity in the solar sector. Industry Minister Li Licheng told the group that regulators will tighten oversight, encourage companies to improve product quality and swiftly retire obsolete production lines, according to an MIIT statement cited by state and international media. The ministry also urged industry bodies to strengthen self-discipline and help stabilise prices. The intervention underscores Beijing’s concern that cut-rate competition has eroded margins at major panel makers. Longi Green Energy, one of the participants, said it plans to accelerate the commercial rollout of higher-efficiency products in anticipation of stricter standards. Further policy guidance is expected as authorities seek to steer the strategically important solar industry toward what they call "high-quality development."
