China Weighs Additional Russian Gas via Power of Siberia After Exports Jump 28%
Gazprom said natural-gas flows to China rose 28.3% in the first eight months of 2025 compared with a year earlier, underscoring Beijing’s growing reliance on Russian energy as Western sanctions continue to constrain Moscow’s traditional export markets. People familiar with the matter said China is now studying whether to raise imports by a further 6 billion cubic metres a year through the existing Power of Siberia pipeline, the main conduit linking eastern Siberian fields with consumers in northern China. Negotiations over the larger Power of Siberia 2 project, which would ship gas from western Siberia to China via Mongolia, have stalled amid disagreements on pricing and financing terms, the sources added.
