China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), along with five other government departments, has held a second meeting within two months with representatives from the photovoltaic (PV) solar industry to address concerns over overcapacity and intense price competition. The ministry urged the sector to strengthen regulations, curb excess production capacity, and reduce extreme competition among firms to promote healthier and more sustainable development. This move aims to accelerate the PV sector's transition toward value-driven growth. The ongoing crackdown on overcapacity in China's solar sector is seen as a critical test for the government’s broader industrial regulation efforts. Meanwhile, China continues to rapidly expand its renewable energy infrastructure, having already tripled renewable energy installations and met its 2030 wind and solar targets six years ahead of schedule. This expansion contributes to a reduction in emissions and positions China advantageously in the global artificial intelligence race, contrasting with the United States' challenges of an aging and fragmented power grid. In the U.S., solar energy is expected to account for half of new electricity additions this year, although rising electricity prices are attributed more to the decommissioning of coal plants and unreliable renewable projects than to data center energy consumption. Additionally, the rapid growth of data centers in the U.S. raises concerns about increased energy demand and water supply depletion in regions such as the Midwest and Great Lakes area.
