Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday urged Japan to “make the right choice” by squarely acknowledging the country’s wartime aggression, warning that continued efforts by “certain forces” in Tokyo to glorify or deny past atrocities challenge the United Nations Charter and the post-war international order. Speaking in Beijing on the 80th anniversary of Japan’s unconditional surrender in World War II, Wang said only by facing history can Japan avoid repeating mistakes and earn international respect. The Chinese Foreign Ministry released the remarks after a meeting of Lancang-Mekong Cooperation foreign ministers. Wang’s comments follow recurring friction between Beijing and Tokyo over historical issues, including visits by Japanese lawmakers to the Yasukuni Shrine and controversies in school textbooks. He added that attempts to whitewash Japan’s war record affront nations that suffered under Japanese occupation and urged the United States to set aside “geopolitical calculations” and uphold an accurate view of history.
