The mobile device security firm iVerify has reported a significant rise in the prevalence of Pegasus spyware among mobile devices since launching a scanning tool in May 2024. This tool has made spyware detection accessible to the general public, revealing numerous victims. Additionally, a new cyber threat has emerged, with a group known as 'Earth Minotaur' deploying the DarkNimbus backdoor using an advanced toolkit called MOONSHINE. This malware targets vulnerable communities, including Tibetans and Uyghurs, by exploiting bugs in WeChat. The findings underscore growing concerns over cybersecurity, as both ordinary users and high-profile individuals are increasingly at risk from sophisticated spyware attacks.
