Japan on Friday marked the 80th anniversary of its surrender in World War II with a national ceremony in Tokyo. The Emperor urged the country to hand down the memory of the conflict to younger generations, while participants offered a minute’s silence for the nearly three million Japanese who died in the war. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told the gathering he felt “remorse” over the war, employing wording that had been absent from Japanese leaders’ speeches for 13 years. Ishiba has yet to decide whether he will issue a separate statement on the anniversary, as some of his predecessors have done. Commemorations extended overseas. A service at the Japanese Memorial Garden in Caliraya, the Philippines, remembered victims on both sides of the Pacific campaign, with messages from Ishiba and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stressing deeper bilateral cooperation and a shared rejection of war. Across the East China Sea, China is preparing its own observances marking the Allied victory over Japan. From Saturday evening to early Sunday, about 40,000 People’s Liberation Army personnel rehearsed a military parade near Tiananmen Square—the second full drill in as many weeks. Images from the rehearsal showed road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles, next-generation tanks, unmanned ground vehicles, drones and the YJ-17, YJ-19 and YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missiles. Beijing’s showpiece parade is scheduled for 3 September, the date China observes as Victory Day. The State Council Information Office will brief reporters on preparations on Wednesday, underscoring the political weight Beijing places on the 80th-anniversary events.
