Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing on Sunday with Park Byeong-seug, the special envoy of newly inaugurated South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, in the first high-level contact between the two governments since Seoul’s change of administration. Park delivered a personal letter from President Lee inviting President Xi Jinping to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in October and conveyed Seoul’s intention to put bilateral relations “back on track.” Wang said China’s policy toward South Korea remains stable and called for both countries to expand common interests and properly manage sensitive issues. The two sides agreed to step up economic and supply-chain cooperation and to coordinate more closely in multilateral forums, according to statements from both governments. The meeting coincided with the 33rd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties and the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the liberation of the Korean Peninsula.
