The New England region experienced its third heat wave of the summer during the week of August 11-15, 2025, with temperatures reaching the low to mid-90s Fahrenheit inland and cooler conditions near the coast due to sea breezes. Humidity levels increased midweek, with dew points peaking around 70°F on Thursday, contributing to the development of scattered, hit-or-miss thunderstorms primarily in the afternoon and evening hours. These storms, particularly on Thursday, posed risks of localized flash flooding due to heavy downpours and slow storm movement. Air quality alerts for ground-level ozone were issued amid the heat. A cold front moved through the area late in the week, bringing cooler and less humid conditions by Friday, with a brief return of heat and humidity on Sunday accompanied by a chance of evening thunderstorms. The weekend was forecast to be drier with seasonable temperatures and lower humidity, followed by much cooler and drier weather early the following week. Additionally, rough surf was expected mid to late week as Tropical Storm Erin likely passed offshore. Despite recent rainfall, drought conditions were expanding in parts of Maine and New Hampshire.
