Bre-B, a new instant payment platform launched by Banco de la República in Colombia, enables users to make immediate and cost-free transfers between different banks using a system of digital keys. The platform, which began operations in mid-July 2025, aims to simplify interbank transactions and has attracted participation from major banks including Bancolombia, Davivienda, Nequi, and Nubank. Starting September 15, users will be able to conduct transfers through Bre-B with some banks offering incentives such as cashback on the 4×1000 tax and promotional benefits including motorcycles to attract users. The system has prompted educational efforts to inform the public on its use and security, with warnings issued about potential scams involving Bre-B keys, especially targeting Nequi users. Bancolombia’s vice president of ecosystems, Luis Miguel Zapata, has explained the operational process, and the platform is expected to boost Colombia’s digital economy by facilitating real-time electronic payments and e-commerce growth. Questions have also arisen regarding whether a single Bre-B key can be linked to multiple accounts across different banks. Additionally, concerns about tax declaration obligations linked to digital payment platforms like Nequi and Daviplata have been highlighted.
