eBay Inc. reported second-quarter revenue of $2.73 billion, exceeding analysts’ $2.64 billion estimate and rising 6 percent from a year earlier. Adjusted earnings climbed 16 percent to $1.37 a share, also ahead of projections, as gross merchandise volume increased 6 percent to $19.51 billion. The marketplace ended the quarter with 134 million active buyers and said it expects third-quarter revenue of $2.69 billion to $2.74 billion and adjusted earnings of $1.29 to $1.34 a share. The stronger-than-forecast results sent the stock up about 10 percent in after-hours trading to roughly $85. Etsy Inc. delivered mixed results earlier in the day. Second-quarter revenue rose 3.8 percent to $672.7 million, topping consensus forecasts, but earnings fell to $0.25 a share, well short of the $0.48 analysts anticipated, in part because of a foreign-exchange loss. Consolidated gross merchandise sales slipped 4.8 percent to $2.81 billion, though the company’s take rate improved to 24 percent, up two percentage points. Adjusted EBITDA declined nearly 6 percent to $169 million, trimming margin by 260 basis points to 25.1 percent. The shares gained about 6 percent after the release. The diverging performances underscore the uneven recovery among online marketplaces. eBay is benefiting from healthy transaction growth across its U.S. and international businesses, while Etsy is contending with softer discretionary spending even as it captures a larger share of each sale.
