McDonald’s Corp. reported second-quarter revenue of $6.84 billion, surpassing analysts’ $6.70 billion forecast, while adjusted earnings reached $3.19 a share against expectations for $3.15. Global comparable sales rose 3.8%, driven by gains of 2.5% in the United States, 4.0% in International Operated Markets and 5.6% in International Developmental Licensed Markets. Price-sensitive promotions, including a US$5 value bundle and a Minecraft movie tie-in, helped reverse four quarters of declining same-store sales. The stock advanced up to 3.5% in New York trading. Executives said re-engaging lower-income diners remains critical as that segment continues to pare back breakfast visits. Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski called the consumer outlook “bifurcated,” noting lingering inflation and economic uncertainty despite recent wage gains. McDonald’s reiterated its focus on affordable menu additions such as the relaunched Snack Wrap and trial cold beverages at roughly 500 U.S. restaurants. Food-delivery leader DoorDash Inc. also beat Wall Street projections, posting a 25% year-over-year jump in second-quarter revenue to $3.28 billion and adjusted earnings of $0.65 a share, versus an expected $0.44. Marketplace gross order value climbed 23% to $24.2 billion and total orders reached a record 761 million, up 20%. Net income was $285 million, reversing a loss a year earlier; the company highlighted rising advertising revenue and expansion into grocery, alcohol and retail deliveries. DoorDash projected third-quarter gross order value of $24.2 billion to $24.7 billion and adjusted Ebitda of $680 million to $780 million, both ahead of consensus estimates. The upbeat outlook, coupled with record quarterly metrics and plans to close its acquisition of U.K. rival Deliveroo later this year, sent shares up roughly 6% in after-hours trading.
