OpenAI's ChatGPT app has reached nearly 700 million installs and generated over $2 billion in revenue since May 2023, according to TechCrunch. In 2025, OpenAI achieved a valuation of approximately $500 billion, just three years after ChatGPT's launch. Despite this valuation, OpenAI's revenue stands at around $13 billion, which is lower compared to Google’s $90 billion revenue in 2016 and Meta’s $135 billion revenue in 2023 when they reached similar valuations. The ChatGPT mobile app alone has earned $1.35 billion in 2025 so far, marking a 673% increase compared to the same period last year and outperforming competitors such as Grok by a wide margin. Industry experts note that with the release of GPT-5, ChatGPT has become deeply embedded in daily life, with some describing it as having “become the verb,” reflecting its pervasive influence. OpenAI’s strategic goal appears to focus on user growth and market dominance rather than solely pursuing artificial general intelligence (AGI).
